The Digestive System of the Zebra Mussel (Dreissena Polymorpha)
A Mussels usually eat organisms at the bottom of the marine food chain. Mussels usually feed on plankton and other microscopic creatures that are floating in the water. Mussels are called filter feeders. The first stage of a Mussels digestive system is that they take in and inhale water through their siphon. After they do that they filter out the particles from the water. After this, an organism called the Cilia separates the particles into smaller pieces and divides the food into edible and non-edible food. then once the Cilia are done the mussel releases the non-edible food through their anus and exhaling Siphon and the digestible food goes to the stomach. Then the stomach digested the food and then the food goes through their intestines and is digested. then any left over materials are excreted through the anus.
